Being the infamous ‘Jack’ of all the rhymes and tales isn’t as glamorous as it sounds. You try being blamed for some chick falling down a hill or taking the rap for a giant attack. My entire life story has been a series of memes—before they were even invented!

After freezing my lady bits off working for the Ice Queen—who never stops singing that song—I decided to take my shaker of salt to an island in the Caribbean to hide from the paparazzi while I drink tiny umbrella drinks.

Cue disaster on day one—I trip over a bottle on the beach that just happens to contain a mysterious map to a legendary graveyard filled with treasure the world thinks is lost forever. I would have tossed it into the ocean, but my spill drew the attention of a bunch of men who couldn’t resist a damsel in distress.

Insert eyeroll here.

Once they saw the map in my hot little hands, I was stuck with them. I didn’t ask to be conscripted on an adventure with two shifter pirates, a masseuse, a demi-god, and a merman who all seem to think I’m on the menu, but here I am.

Maybe I should have taken the Ice Queen’s musical advice?

Being the infamous fairy tale ‘Jack’ isn’t as glamorous as it sounds. My entire life has been a series of memes—before they were even invented!

My current ‘Jack’ title is companion to the Ice Queen—who spent the first couple of years singing that song—but my sentence here is almost over. I’m going to make a run for it to retire with my shaker of salt on an island in the Caribbean while I drink piña coladas.

Before I leave, I realize my heart wasn’t as frozen as I thought and I have to save Queenie from her evil sister. We make a plan to escape together after the Yule celebration, but even that falls victim to my legendary bad luck.

Enter two bumbling pirates who were playing Robin Hood, a monkey, and a sea voyage to our permanent hiding place…only to trip over a bottle on the beach that contains a mysterious map to a legendary graveyard filled with famous treasure the moment we arrive.

My spill draws the attention of our pirate friends and two other local hotties who can’t resist damsels in distress.

My girl and I didn’t ask to be conscripted on an adventure with two shifter pirates, a masseuse, a demi-god, and a merman who think we’re on the menu, but here we are.

Maybe I should have taken the Ice Queen’s musical advice when I first arrived ?

🗺️ Hoist the Flag is the prequel to a new paranormal, poly romance series called ‘Triangles & Tribulations’. The prequel will appear in the Jingle My Balls anthology in December 2022. 🗺️

High school didn’t make that easy, but I managed to avoid rich kid drama by keeping my head down. I spent most of my time with my best friends Elijah, Atticus, Grady, and Jaxon. Their parents worked on the horse farm like mine and we were thick as thieves—inseparable from the time we could walk.

That is, until the night of the Cotillion when a group of popular kids targeted me for destruction.

A girl I didn’t know saved me from total public humiliation, but my ‘friends’ were nowhere to be found. The guys tried to explain where they were, but I knew how they’d be distracted.

In the Hollow, when the football team picks someone, nothing else matters.

That ended our friendship and my girlish crush, so as soon as we graduated , I high-tailed it out of town. I got my teaching degree, took a job in the city, and vowed to never return. Then the pandemic hit and public schools cut staff budgets, including my position. I had no option except move home and take the one job I desperately didn’t want: teacher at Whistler’s Hollow Formative School.

Now, everywhere I go, I feel the weight of four pairs of eyes watching me like their last meal.

A year isn’t that long, right?
